Learning to Dream

Today in homeschooling, we began Black History Month I had to research the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for a report.

Martin Luther King:The Hero of the Civil Rights

The Rev. Dr. Martin King Jr. Was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in America during the 1960`s. He was born on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 in Alanta, Georgia. Dr. King graduated from Morhouse College in 1948 with a degree in Sociology. He got his Ph.D. in 1955. Dr. King has been awarded many Honoray degrees through out the yearz. Three of them r: Docter of Civil Law at the University of New Castle, Docter of Lawz at Jewish Theological Seminary and Docter of Sociol Science at Amsterdam free Univesity. Dr. King was ordained in Feb 1948 at the age of 9teen in Alanta. He was co-paster at Ebenzer Baptist Church from 1960 2 his death in 1968.

Dr. King was noted for leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was
chosen as one of 6teen world leaderz that had the most adavcement in freedom in 1959
by Ling Magazine. He wrote bookz and articlez such as "Stride Toward Freedom" in 1958, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?" in 1967 and "The Trumpet of Conscience" in 1968. Dr. King got a Nobel Peace Prize for his speech "March on Washington".
Dr. King was killed by a gunshot. Dr. King was on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennesse on Aprill 4, 1968 2 help sanitation workerz with a protest against low wagez. James Earl Ray pleaded guilty and was sentenced 2 Tennesse state penitentiary for 99 yearz.

Dr. King was a great man. Because of him, Civil Rights became a reality and discrimanation became illegal. There is a lot of work 2 b done, but in many ways, Dr. Kings dream came.

Homeschooling Again!

I've been homeschooled since I was very young. I have never been to "normal" school. I like homeschooling; I can take my time and learn more about the things I enjoy, like math and science.

On Monday, we started up schooling again after the winter break. This week, we're just doing CDROMS to get back on track. I like "ClueFinders," "Carmen Sandiego" and "Brain Quest."

Every day, I have to look up the "Word of the Day" and write down the definition and use it in a sentence. Every other month, I am tested on those words. I need to know the definitions, part of speech and how to spell them. I am very good at spelling.

Once a week, I have to write a report. It's usually based on something I learned in my textbooks or workbooks that week. I use books and the Internet to research the topic. My favorite report so far was on Seattle. I'd like to visit Seattle someday.

My favorite part of homeschooling is that I can learn at my own pace. I can go as fast as I want, or spend a lot of time on something if I'm having trouble with it. My least favorite part is doing essays. They are almost the same thing as reports!

I'm going to write a lot about homeschooling on this blog. I've seen a lot of blogs with my Mom about parents who homeschool, but none about kids who are homeschooled. If there are any, I'd like to read them! I think that blogging could be a good way for people to see what it's like to be a homeschooler. Sometimes, people get the wrong idea about it. Like, they'll think we are "religious nuts" or that my parents are too protective. It's not like that for us at all.

I hope people will enjoy reading it.

My Holidays....or Holidaze

Decemeber is REALLY busy in my house! My mom is a Christian and my dad is Jewish, so we celebrate Christmas AND Hannukah.

Hannukah is the Festival of Lights. It's an ancient Jewish religion celebrating a miracle involving candles and oil. So every year for 8 nights, we light candles to remember this miracle and give gifts.

This year, Hannukah began on the evening of December 7th. The first night, we light the shofar (the center candle on the menorah) and one other candle. Because I am the oldest, I get to light the shofar. We usually get small gifts of candy on the first night, like gelt, which is traditional chocolate coins. YUM! Each day, the gifts get a little bigger until we get one big present on the 8th night. This year, I got an Nintendo DS! I really wanted one! It's pretty cool. :)

Christmas is not like Hannukah in a lot of ways. Hannukah begins on a different evening every year, because it's based on the Hebrew calendar. Christmas is always on the 25th of December. Sometimes, the two holidays even overlap! That's a lot of fun.

We had a great time on Christmas this year. Dad made a big turkey, and Mom made sweet potatoes and corn. I love those. I got my own DVD player with "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" on DVD! I love Harry Potter, and I was so happy to get the movie.

I like celebrating both holidays. Sometimes, a person will ask me if I get confused by it, but I just laugh that off. It's not's fun! And besides, I enjoy getting to share in both of my parents' traditions.

Lemony Snicket

I finally saw Lemony Snicket! It was so good. It's about three siblings whose parents were killed in a fire. The three children had an evil guardion called Count Olaf who wants their parents' fortune! So the children tried to tell Mr.Poe (who is their parents' banker), but he didn`t listen (like always). The youngest (baby "Sunny") can`t talk so there will be subtitles, like when Count Olaf (who keeps calling Sunny a monkey) said, "Does monkey want a banana?" Sunny replied "I am not a monkey!"
I ca
n`t wait for the next movie!

T.V. has been around for 50 years. In the 50`s tv was mainly about couples, like "I Love Lucy." The 60`s was variety shows like "Laugh-In." The 70`s was another story; it was all adult humor like "Rhoda" and "M*A*S*H." The 80`s was about Family Shows like "The Cosby Show." The 90`s had a lot of shows about singles, like "Friends" and "Seinfeld." 2000-2004 (So far...) it's all so-called "reality" shows like "Survivor" and "American Idol." What will tv be like in the future, I wonder? Violence, maybe? Who knows.

Which Harry Potter Character Are You?
